Ann's By Heart Devotionals

Pick up the Phone and Dial
by Ann Stewart

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ (Jeremiah 33:3)

Recently, while on vacation, I experienced nausea, fever, chills, and severe headaches. After days of discomfort, I awakened in the middle of the night and told my husband, “If anything happens to me, you and the girls should move to Seattle.” He packed our bags, and we left the motel at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. After our six-hour drive, I went to Urgent care. I prayed the diagnosis would be definitive. When the doctor examined me, she said it was merely Strep. That seemed unsatisfactory for the extreme fever, chills, and head-in-the-vice pain I was experiencing. She told me to watch for signs of meningitis and to see my regular doctor for a follow-up.

Let's Get into Summer...

Dear Friends,

Hot and humid Washington, DC in the summer is hardly a dry place, but that doesn’t mean my spiritual life isn’t dry. Sometimes writing and speaking about Jesus consumes a place that should be filled with personal time with Him. I can only go so long without feeling empty and as if my life is out of focus and out of balance. What about you?

I experience emptiness because, like the errant sheep on Skyemoor Farm, I’ve wandered out of the pasture. Or I’m more about doing than being. But sometimes, for no apparent reason, the voice of the Shepherd seems faint and distant.

Looking at the number of books written on the subject of spiritual dryness, I’m not alone.

Though the answer to closeness with Jesus isn’t always in reading a book (unless it’s the Bible), sometimes knowing someone else has experienced what I’m going through can spur me on to improved spiritual health.

Get into focus spending time with Jesus - anywhere!

If you struggle, too, perhaps this month’s devotional will help you in your prayer life. And if you have any thoughts about your return to sweet fellowship with Jesus, feel free to share them!

In Christian Friendship,

Ann
