Somebody Loves Ewe

February 2008

In the children’s book “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch,” a lonely old man who works in a shoelace factory receives a box of candy and a card with the words, “Somebody Loves You.” As he tries to guess the anonymous giver, his whole life changes. He reaches out to others because he feels loved. His actions cause reactions and he develops new friends. But what Mr. Hatch doesn’t know is that he mistakenly received the card; the note was not meant for him. Nevertheless, knowing “Somebody Loves You” changed his life. Who would have thought good could come of a mistake?

Could you make a mistake like that? This February how could you say, “Somebody loves you”?  How about an old-fashioned valentine or a simple heart-shaped cookie from the grocery store, or a quick e-mail? This morning I felt compelled to send my friend a two-sentence note. “One of the most delightful surprises of this year has been my friendship with you. Thank you for being such an encourager and a joy to be around. She responded that it brought tears to her eyes.

Consider setting a goal to compliment others. I had a junior high teacher who had the number THREE on his desk to remind him to encourage three students each day. I’ve also heard a third-party compliment is the best way to hear praise. Pass on a compliment you’ve heard. That’s a GOOD way to gossip J. Indeed, when someone says, “Someone told me you have a beautiful voice,” it creates a sense of mystery that an anonymous person is passing around praise.

February is a great month to think about how to say, “Somebody Loves You.” Pass on God’s love and watch your actions have positive reactions.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen (Ephesians 4:29).
